MEET meredith

Some sessions feel meaningful from the very beginning, and this one was exactly that.

Hannah and I actually go way back. Nearly ten years ago, we spent seasons of life traveling up and down the East Coast as college academic recruiters—Hannah for Marshall University and me for Fairmont State University. Those years were full of long drives, college fairs, and conversations in between it all. So getting to photograph this season of her life, alongside Ian, felt incredibly special.

Their New River Gorge engagement session in Fayetteville, West Virginia was the perfect reflection of who they are—laid back, joyful, and deeply connected—with some of the most breathtaking views our state has to offer.

Why Choose New River Gorge for Your Engagement Photos

If you’re dreaming of engagement photos that feel both adventurous and timeless, the New River Gorge is one of the most beautiful locations in West Virginia.

With its sweeping mountain views, dramatic overlooks, and the iconic New River Gorge Bridge, it offers a variety of backdrops that make your session feel dynamic without ever needing to travel far. It’s a place that naturally creates space for both quiet, intimate moments and those wide, cinematic views.

For couples like Hannah and Ian, it was the perfect setting—somewhere that felt meaningful, scenic, and a little bit adventurous all at the same time.

Hannah & Ian’s New River Gorge Engagement Session

From the moment we started, this session felt easy in the best way.

Hannah and Ian have such a natural rhythm together—full of laughter, ease, and the kind of connection that doesn’t need to be forced. That made it so simple to lean into a more documentary, movement-based approach, allowing their personalities to come through in every moment.

We spent time exploring the 8 mile stretch that goes below the New River Gorge Bridge, where the views stretch endlessly across the mountains and down into the river below. The scale of the landscape paired with their quiet, in-between moments created such a beautiful balance throughout the session.

As the evening went on, the light softened and wrapped around the mountains in that signature golden glow—giving us the dreamiest finish to an already incredible session.

Tips for Planning Your Engagement Session at New River Gorge

If you’re considering the New River Gorge for your engagement photos, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Plan for the best light
Sunrise and sunset will always give you that soft, glowing light—especially in a location like this where the mountains interact so beautifully with the sun. We captured this session in early spring, which gave us the opportunity for unique views under the bridge that would otherwise be obstructed by foliage!

Be ready to explore
Some of the best views require a little bit of walking and/or driving, but it’s always worth it. Bringing comfortable shoes for in-between locations makes a big difference.

Embrace the experience
Mountain weather can shift quickly, but that’s often what creates the most beautiful and unique moments. Going in with a flexible mindset allows you to fully enjoy it.

What to Wear for a Mountain Engagement Session

Outfits can completely elevate the feel of your session, especially in a location like the New River Gorge. Hannah and Ian chose the perfect balance of both elevated and casual!

For sessions like this, I recommend:

  • Neutral or earthy tones that complement the landscape
  • Flowy pieces that create movement
  • Layers and textures to add depth

Hannah and Ian chose outfits that felt effortless and true to them, which allowed everything to come together so naturally against the backdrop of the mountains.
